Vegan Donuts for Las Vegans

My google search on vegan always turns up things on the inhabitants of sin city: Las Vegans. Thus I was very glad to be able to put years of false search hits to a small but wonderful use with this pun: Vegan Vegas Donuts.

An article about Chocolate Decadence

An article about the vegan candy company:

"Melner, without offering specific dollar figures, said his company is profitable, but not hugely so. He said he takes out a loan every year to get through the summer months, when the company loses money because of slow sales and the extra expense of shipping chocolate with ice packets to prevent melting."

On page 2, this article uses the local version of the word pricey: spendy.

Trans Fat & Vegan Sweets

OPB had a piece today about removing trans fats from foods. From the report it appears that this effects many vegan food options. They talked to one cafe owner who said:

"one thing we used to have a Pecan bar that was a popular vegan item. And that was one we actually found pretty impossible to do without the margarine - unless we wanted to make it not vegan. We could do it with butter. So we just eliminated that item and we did have some backlash one. That was a popular one."

They also talked to VooDoo Donuts who said that having to switch oils would increase his production costs.

At first this trend to legislate what people can and can eat seemed like yet another encroachment of big brother. An encroachment that was hitting me where it counts - in the taste buds.

After I stewed on it for a bit, another thought occurred to me. Legislating what people can and can't eat is a pandora's box that I imagine most vegans would like to open. While it might cost a quarter more for voodoo donuts, in the long run who knows what "foods" we might be able to make illegal.
